Reading vs. Writing 

Lately, I've seen a lot of authors stating they 'no longer review books' that they read for enjoyment. This is in reference to websites like Goodreads, Shelfari and even their own blogs. The reason is usually down to attacks they receive when they state they didn't like a book, or even point out a few flaws in the novel.

This makes me sad.

Yes, I'm fairly new to the publishing world, but anyone who follows me on Twitter or Goodreads knows just how many books I read. I may be an author, but I'm also a reader.

I have an opinion, and I will voice it after I've read a book.

I'm never nasty in my response. Everything is my personal opinion, and I think that is where some people get confused.

As an author, every single review means so much to me. I doubt the excitement would go away even if I was getting hundreds. It's exhilarating to know someone purchased my words and enjoyed them. Even more so when that person wants to tell the world just how much they liked my book and share their favorite pieces.

Reviews make other people want to read!

So if authors rely on reviews this much, why shouldn't we review other people's work?

I recently read a series of young adult books that had a very mixed response. Reviewers either adored it or they hated it; there was never any middle ground. This, to me, shows how largely opinions can differ about the same piece of writing. It is rarely an attack, just what someone's thoughts were at the time of reading.

I personally loved the series, even though the first one was rather repetitious, making the main character seem whiny at best. I still gave the book a high rating and devoured the rest of the series. My comment was a small part of an overall review that was packed with aspects I did like.

It does sadden me that authors feel they can no longer state an opinion, because what better advertizement for your book is there than another author reading and reviewing it?

I love writing novels, especially LDS romance and suspense. I have written five full-length novels, and my first novel, The Alias was released May 08, 2011.

Jumping in the car (well....van), cranking the music, and going for a long drive, is one of my favorite things to do. With no errands to run or destination in mind, I feel free--happy. My kids quiet, my mind clears, and I can think to the beat of the music while I delight in the view of the valleys, streams and farms. I love to discover new places and the kids and I have discovered many "favorite" rides. Our best ride is the drive around Bird Island, near Lincoln beach at Utah Lake. We love the lake. My boys have a fantastic time discovering new birds along the shore line, and of course, we always have to stop to admire the spiders and insects in the rocks. We find a fossil or two, and then go on our way. I truly enjoy this time with my kids. Not only do they learn to appreciate the beauty that God has created on this earth, but they learn about new and amazing things. With each trip, their world broadens a bit more.

Riding and driving is also the best time for me. I love to write novels. Like an artist, the locales we visit and the amazing things we discover inspire my stories. I like to write about the places I visit and love the very best. I always try to incorporate the mountains, lakes, and towns we find into my novels. It feels like I'm bringing a little bit of that area home with me. I'm also a "people watcher". Some people might call that "staring", but I think of it more along the lines of "discovering".  I enjoy seeing how different people live their lives. Everyone has something unique to offer this world-- the farmer, the fisherman, the grocer, and so many, many more. Each person I see along my way inspires the characters in my stories. With just a passing glance, a new character can suddenly pop into my head, and slowly, a story begins to form. Seeing people and visiting new places help to bring my characters and plot to life. I can find the story's "personality" in my mind, and I love to create my new character's individuality. While writing the novel, my characters become real in my mind. I'm able to discover their background, their fears, their joy, and unique nature. And just as my characters come to life, so do the locales in which my stories are set. I enjoy researching new places and even more, visiting new places. 

Taking rides with my family is the inspiration for my creativity. I may not ever see all of my novels in print, but I am determined to never lose sight of my ability to create and discover. Like a souvenir, my stories are memories of the places I've seen, visited and loved. I'm blessed to live in such a diverse area with cities, valleys, mountains and deserts. I hope, like me, that the rides we take and the places we discover will leave lasting memories for my children, and will one day inspire in them the desire to create in their own unique ways.

"Why I Write"

Authors are asked all the time where they get their ideas, what time of day they write, how their process works. It’s not often they’re asked why they write. So I want to talk a bit about why I write.

A long, long time ago (but still in this very galaxy) a young boy in elementary school was given a writing assignment. He labored over every word until his hand cramped from squeezing his pencil. He declared to his mother then and there, “I will never be a writer.”

Not much later, he was given another writing assignment. This assignment asked him to write a story about any topic he wished. So he cast some of his classmates in an adventure story where the mismatched crew searches for a hidden treasure, only to discover the treasure is alive! Some of the team members get eaten by the vengeful chest of gold and jewels. Then, this young writer ended his story with the world’s oldest cliché.

It was just a dream!

The narrator wakes up to find himself at a sleepover with the same explorer friends. Only the ones that got eaten in the dream are nowhere to be found.

That little guy had so much fun writing his story, he forgot he was “writing” at all. He read the story to his class, and they laughed and applauded. When his teacher passively remarked that the story lent itself to a sequel, the boy went on to write, “The Living Treasure II.”

Fast forward to junior high. That same kid reads Bram Stoker’s Dracula. During a particular scene gooseflesh ripples over his skin. He’s having an actual physical response to nothing more than marks on a page. The special effects and pyrotechnics are all in his head. And it’s the most amazing feeling he’s ever had.

That’s when he decides he wants to be a writer.

Obviously, that kid is me.

Those two separate experiences, along with a teacher’s encouragement to try to publish, changed my life. I grew addicted to evoking emotions in others with story--whether getting laughs like from my classmates in elementary school, or producing chills like I felt while reading Dracula. The Diary of Anne Frank made me cry. Something I had no idea words on a page could do. Stephen King kept me up at night, quivering. Ray Bradbury took me away to other worlds where magic was real and humans colonized Mars.

I wanted to do that for others.

I still want to do that.

Why do I write? Because I want to move readers the same way my favorite writers moved me. It’s all that matters.

Busy Summer

Where does the time go? I look at my calender and see that it is already July 22nd.  I find it amazing to know that we are almost to August already and soon the summer heat will give way to cooler temps and the holidays will be barreling towards us!

What's going on in the life of Stacy Eaton? 

FOR ME:  First off - the first two weeks of July had me barely on the computer due to major technical issues. I was barely able to get into my e-mail accounts and trying to work on my blog, or go to Facebook or Twitter were beyond easy to do. So when I finally got all the issues fixed, it took me some time to get everything caught up.  

I managed to grab a few days at the beach with my best friend. A couple days to recharge my batteries and clear my head. I wish it could have been longer, but I was happy to have what I could have! We are hoping to do it one more time, but this time bring the kids with us. We will see if that will happen. 

FOR YOU:  Our August Daily Giveaway is coming up in 10 DAYS!!!! So I have been busy getting everyone's pages together!  Wait to you all see the list of author's that will be with us for the month of August!  We have some great authors and some pretty awesome books to give away all month! 

Exciting news for me was Book 2 of the My Blood Runs Blue series was sent to my publisher on Wed the 20th!!  101,996 words (before editing) make up Blue Blood for Life.  It should be out early fall and I am excited to start the publishing process.  I think designing the cover is one of the highlights of the experience! 

MY WRITING: After going back and forth on my current writing of "Liveon", which is a stand alone novel, I have put this work aside for a little while.  I have read through the chapters I have over and over and there is just something missing to keep the flow moving the way I want it. So I have decided to put it aside for now to allow myself to work through the writer's block I seem to have on that particular story. I hope to pick it up again early next year after I have completed Book 3 of the My Blood Runs Blue Series.

In the mean time, I have started another book.  This one will be called "Whether I'll Live or Die" and will be a fictional story about the emotional turmoil and physical pain of Domestic Violence. This is an issue that is near and dear to my heart. Being a police officer I see men and women that deal with domestic violence in their lives everyday. My hope with this book is to reach out and hopefully give someone the encouragement to find a way out and to rebuild their life. I'm excited about this book and I am currently working on it when I can. 

Book 3 in the My Blood Runs Blue Series is still in plot stages. I have yet to put the fingers to the keyboard on this one to start the actual story, but I know the general plot of it and hope to get this story started next month.
