For our blog, we decided to let our readers determine the content by asking questions.
Q: Do you guys have a pre-planned storyline for each of the character pair ups or do you let them run the show and follow them down the proverbial rabbit's hole to see what kind of roller-coaster ride they take you on?
Vaughn: I think it’s a little of both. Sometimes we have an idea right out the gate of who we want together, and how their story is going to play out. Other times, the characters lead us into surprising territory. That’s the great thing about fiction, you can never quite tell what’s going to happen.
Bunni: I totally agree with Vaughn here, and I have to add I just love it when they surprise us!
Q: How do you guys come up with the stories and keep them all flowing so well? I love the imagination you have.
Vaughn: I think that ties in partly to the previous question. A lot of times, its character led. It’s kind of a schizophrenic feeling, the way that they can drive ideas and motivations. The other part, in my opinion, is the fact that the imagination is like an all-you-can-eat buffet for the mind. If you want something, you can always live that vicariously through your fiction. Writing opens up the opportunity to experience everything you’ve ever dreamed up.
Bunni: Also, we tend to live in each other’s headspace a lot, which helps a great deal when you’re spinning lives and building worlds.
Q: What advice would you give young ladies today?

Vaughn: I’m going to paraphrase a quote that Bunni told me once. Figure out what your dream is and do something every day to make it happen. It may be hard, grueling, repetitive work, but it’s worth it to live your life how you want to live it.

Bunni: Masturbate well and often, and invest in high quality vibrators.

For the following two questions, we will assign each one to one of our released couples, as to answer each of them for all the characters would get a bit lengthy.
Q: What are Davian and Starr’s concepts about war and peace?

Davian would say that war is a necessary evil, and that the best way to handle such nasty business is to do just that – make it a business. If people are going to be dying, other people should be making money off of it.

Starr was raised as a flower child, and as such was raised with Peace and Love being paramount. She’s a fairly peaceful soul, but does understand it sometimes takes war to create and maintain that peace.

Q: What do Dresdin and Everett think is critical in making a kingdom safe?

Dresdin is well-versed in the idea that safety means a close eye on the enemy, and little mercy for those who cross the line.

Everett believes in a quiet and strong leadership. He carries a big stick, true, but he doesn’t want the enemy to know he has it. Everett rules with a silken glove hiding an iron fist.
If the Aetherwood characters could get rid of any one person - by sending them away, banishing them, packing them off for a looong holiday, or just plain booting them out, who would it be?

GG. You, the readers, don’t know who that is yet, but you just wait.

Q:What’s coming up for Lion and Mermaid?

Vaughn: One of my favorite series will be out August 26th. It includes Everett’s children, who are some of the most vivid, unique characters to grace my imagination.

Bunni: And mermaids! Those come soon as well- but I have to agree with Vaughn, Everett’s children are pretty darn awesome. Cannot wait to share them with everyone!

Guest Blog Kenneth Weene
I set this book in my hometown of Boston because, having lived elsewhere for over 35 years, I wanted to revisit. Originally it was to be called "Mary's Story" or possibly "A Widow's Tale: - not very inspiring titles. When I realized that Mary and and boyfriend Arnie had to have at least one sensual and sexual encounter as part of their coming together, I asked if they'd like to take a road trip to Maine, another important site from my childhood. Both characters immediately said yes; although Mary was a bit unsure - sexual fulfillment was a new concept for her.

Arnie, being a laid-back guy drove up old Route 1; no highways for him. Passing through Newburyport, which is an old whaling town in Massachusetts and where I went to high school, they saw the wonderful old houses built by the whaling captains for their brides. Those houses typically had small walkways, widow's walks, on the roofs so the women could watch for their husband's ships. Mary loved those old houses; she wouldn't stop talking about them. Finally, since they had to get on the road so Arnie could go to L.L. Bean and buy his trademark flannel shirts, I told Mary that I'd name the book for those widow's walks if she'd get in Arnie's Buick.

I hope you enjoy reading Mary's story.

Truth and Beauty

A few weels ago in a dark movie theater watching the last Harry Potter movie, I remembered why I love to write, I wasn’t one of those who made it for the midnight viewings. I’d promised my niece that we would watch it together. (We’re both very bookish and deeply devoted to all things JK Rowling.) The promise was a bit hard to keep, as she wouldn’t be coming to visit ‘til July 18th. But a couple of days after the premiere (and taking advantage of cheaper matinee pricing) we marched down to the local Cinemark.

I knew I’d be sad. I’d read a tweet by Cheryl Klein (continuity editor on later HP’s) where she compared her night at the premiere to watching your best friends getting beaten up for two hours. So, yeah, I knew it would probably be a tear-jerker. For some people.

But I wasn’t prepared.

Like many readers, I feel an intense connection to Severus Snape every time I read through the second half of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. But I seriously wasn’t prepared for the effect that his story would have on me when presented on a really, really big screen.

Oh, my goodness, from the moment Alan Rickman first walked on the screen, and without his having uttered any words, you could feel Snape's inner turmoil. It was painful, hearing him deliver that initial warning about not sheltering Harry Potter. If you’ve seen it, surely you felt what I’m talking about. How conflicted Snape was as he made those demands of all of the Hogwarts students? I got shivers.

And then the pensieve scene. Oh my. Oh I so did not see my reaction coming. Liquid just started gushing from my eyes and nose. I was shaking with tears.  And, of course, trying to do it quietly so as not to disturb other people near me. But I couldn’t stop. I think the tears started the moment I heard young Severus’ voice. So small, so earnest. So obviously over-the-top in love with Lily, his one friend in all the wide world.

And Snape’s anguish when he comes to Dumbledore knowing Lily’s been killed? “They put their trust in the wrong person, just like someone else I know.” Which brings us to the on-screen moment when Snape weeps over the dead body of his best friend, his compass-star, his one true love.

That was the moment when I leaned into my husband, took his hand, and whispered, “I want to tell stories like this—the kind that make you ache because of their beauty and truth.” He squeezed my hand back.  I think he might have been crying a little, too.

August Daily Giveaway - Day #23 - Katina Fergunson

August Daily Giveaway Day #23 Formally Introduces
Katina Ferguson
Fergyville Episode 1: The New Plan

 Giveaway a E-book edition
Contemporary Fiction for Adults
Description of book:

Fun, light read. Very short, very entertaining, and yes, there is a cliffhanger at the end. That's why I wrote Episode 2…so you won't shoot me.

Synopsis:
Frank and Catherine are parents worn down by three young children, and life. As they try to come up with a new, more efficient, way of managing their lives, they are met with a series of unforeseen obstacles. When Frank gets home from work, things don't seem quite right. He begins to wonder if some of the problems experienced by his family are in fact the work of malicious people from his past.

About the Author:

Born in Montreal, Canada (to Caribbean parents), Katina feels that her multicultural upbringing has shaped a unique voice for her in the realm of storytelling. Katina describes her initial connection with writing as unexpected. “My mother gave me a journal for my tenth birthday and after penning a few entries I really felt like ‘journaling’ was the perfect outlet for my random intellection. I wrote almost every day”. Journal entries evolved into poems, personal essays and short stories.

Presently, Katina Ferguson is a freelance writer and author of the family-themed blog Fergyville. Her e-book, Fergyville Episode 1: The New Plan (of no relation to the blog) is the first to be released in the Fergyville serial novelette installment.

Inspiration Can Come from Anywhere

The Fergyville series is not something I envisioned writing.  I had it in my mind (like most rookies) that I would write an epic fantasy novel; one that was mind-blazing. Yes, that's what I said…mind-blazing!  People were going to walk around, holding their heads saying, "Jesus Christ! I can't handle all this awesomeness!"  I even had a concept (something I got from a dream) that had not been done before.  It was a fresh angle on paranormal material and I was really excited about writing it. I was sure that my voice would make me the next J. K. Rowling.

When I started to work on this concept of mine, I discovered something interesting about myself…one of those hidden talent thingies.  I found out that I was extremely creative in the way that I butchered a story beyond repair. I mean really…even I had no clue as to how I took a sure-to-make-me-famous story and turned it into a sure-to-kill-'em-with-boredom story, but that's what happened.  Everything fell flat, especially the characters, and I put the manuscript to rest in my "crashed & burned" files.

Okay…so back to the general idea that inspiration can come from anywhere.  I talk to my dad every three to four weeks, just to catch up things and see how he's doing. I tell him about the chaos of having three young kids in the house (what he calls payback), I talk about how tired I am, how tired my husband is and about the car that needs fixing.  For instance, right now, the driver-side door of my car won't open. Initially I thought someone tried to break into the car and messed up the lock, but my husband was skeptical about my theory. Naturally, I had to open his eyes and make him see what was in plain sight…the multiple scratch marks near the keyhole where the wanna-be car thief (blind as a bat) kept missing the lock and scraped around it.  After having a police officer look at the car, it was determined that there was absolutely no evidence of an attempted break-in (at all).  Those scratch marks by the keyhole all point back to me…oops!  Until we rack up some cash to get the door fixed, I find ingenious ways to get into the driver seat without giving anyone the impression that I'm mentally retarded. Still, I know there were times did not escape that label.

These situations from my life are no big deal to me, but to my dad, they are much more. He's constantly entertained and because of this, he insisted that I write, "this kinda stuff," and put it in a book.   I'm glad that I followed through with his suggestion. I'm having a great time writing the Fergyville series and I believe that people are having a great time reading it too. The characters are highly relatable, the story line keeps readers in anticipation for the next book, and as long as I pay attention to my surroundings, there is a constant stream of material.

So yeah, I'm not writing the mind-blazing, 20-part'er, paranormal-themed novel I set out to write, and it's okay.  Sometimes one doesn't need to craft an epic story, they just need to know how to tell the ones that are already there.
