We left Clint's creator Helen Hanson at home while we spoke with Clint!

Welcome Clint!! Do me a favor and tell me a little bit about the book you star in.

Clint Masters here.  I’m a founder of CatSat Laboratories, and I’m not a big fan of the press. My co-founder, Todd, is the headline-maker.  I’m only here because Helen asked me to talk to you.  I’d rather not re-live this nightmare.  

Well, I appreciate you coming... I can understand it might not be pleasant. 

This whole disaster started the day Beth disappeared. A kidney infection requires her to be on dialysis, so she couldn’t leave town without her dialysis machine.  Or without telling me.  We’d been inseparable for the prior two months. Her parents and uncle were scared.  When they gave me conflicting excuses about her absence, I knew her life was in jeopardy.

I didn’t know at the time, but the CIA was in crisis.  Someone hacked their computer systems and launched an unauthorized mission.  The trouble was, they had no idea who did it, nor the intended target.   Did they have trained CIA agents on the loose?  Terrorists?   

The guys at Langley scrambled to figure it out before the situation exploded, but that meant sifting through millions of computer programs. Could it have been an inside job?  Only a handful of people had access and the technical skills to wreak that kind of havoc.

How was I to know how our lives would intertwine?  Then I discovered that Beth wasn’t the only one missing: nine other people including a four year-old girl.  Who would want them as hostages?

I was a happy man until the lovely bride-of-my-youth decided she’d rather be single. I’m not trying to brag, but as a wealthy men . I could spend a lot more money than I do, but my needs are pretty simple. But at that point, I figured, screw it.  Why am I working this hard?  So I quit my job and bought a sailboat. I even found a sweet, black lab to keep me company.  Until I met Beth.

I loved my wife, Paige, but she wouldn’t even see a marriage counselor. And she was routinely gone late at night. Then she was gone for good.  Or so I thought.  I didn’t want a new relationship.  But we don’t ever plan to fall in love.  Do we?

When Beth disappeared, I decided to find her myself. Maybe it wasn’t a practical decision, but no one else was looking for her. Her body needed routine dialysis to filter the poison accumulating in her blood.  She didn’t have her machine, and without it, she was going to die. 

Wow Clint... You sound like a Knight in Shining armor racing to the princesses side!  I appreciate you telling us about the book and I hope you won't mind answering just a few questions before you go.

S.E. We all want to be different, so what is the one thing you wish your creator had done differently with you?

I wish she hadn’t been so damn honest.  I’m not the kind of guy who gets stupid over women, but Beth– she’s extraordinary.  My world has always been a logical progression. I mean, how many men marry their third-grade sweetheart?  It was supposed to last a lifetime.  But Paige made plans without me, and only a fool wouldn’t take that hint.  So even though I wasn’t looking for another relationship, meeting Beth was a life-changing moment.  Pursuing her was worth any risk.

If you could have added something to the story, and your creator would have let you, what would that have been? 

Life is all about pursuit.  What gets you out of bed in the morning?  Some of the people you’ll meet in 3 LIES pursued only destruction.  Now they may not agree with my assessment, but Helen asked my opinion not theirs.   I’m a builder.  A problem solver.  In my world, loyalty and honor still matter. So maybe she can tell their story next time. Helen hasn’t told me what she’s working on now that she’s completed DARK POOL.  

What do you love best about yourself? What do you like least?

Love about me?  Wow. That’s not something I’ve considered before but, okay.  I have commitment.  I’m a doer, and I accomplish what I set out to do no matter the obstacles.  Anyone can stumble upon fortune.  But not success.  You have to earn success.  I worked my tail off to build my company.  Todd and I both did.  Still, I refuse to let anything own my soul.

Like least.  Hmm.  The same focus that helps me succeed can be a blinder to the rest of my life.  As my almost-ex wife Paige likes to point out, I don’t always notice the thing in front of my face.  When I commit to something, it becomes a priority.  Why bother doing anything half-assed? 

What part of the book was the hardest for you and your creator to work through?

When my marriage to Paige crumbled, I went through a time where I thought all the truths in my world were equally fragile.  But a guy can only mope around so long without feeling some personal disgust.  I mourned, but then I moved on.  Bought a boat.  Got a dog.  Threw away my cell phone.  It was a complete reboot of my life.  Then I met Beth.

Is there a sequel for this book? If so, what do you want to accomplish in the next book.  If not, do you wish you could continue your story?

You never know.  I’m still alive, and it’s a dangerous world out there. We’ve employed the CatSat technology for a variety of global and national emergencies.  Helen may need to call me in for another critical situation.  If so, I’m good to go.
