Paranormal Attractions Sneak Peeks: Phantasm

Paranormal Attractions Sneak Peeks!

Today's Sneak Peek is at Phantasm by J.L. Campbell

 Excerpt from Chapter 9

The mattress dipped on the other side of the bed and Dwayne sat with his back to her. She rolled over, trailing her fingers over his shirt. One foot of his shoe thumped to the floor and then the other. He got off the bed to remove his shirt and her hand fell to the sheet.

She'd always appreciated his concern and consideration. He'd tiptoe around trying not to wake her, but she was good at sensing when he was near and woke most of the time to greet him. The mattress moved again when he got up.

Still half asleep, she followed his movements—the rustle of his clothing as he got out of his pants and the clink of his belt buckle as it hit the chair in the corner. He padded to the bathroom and she wriggled closer to the middle of the bed, prepared to snuggle into the curve of his body when he lay down.

She'd fallen asleep by the time he came to bed. The weight of his hand fell across her waist and he lay behind her, just the way she liked. Her butt fit into his groin, his chest warmed her back and his breath teased the hair at her nape.

She wriggled a little, but couldn't get comfortable. The weight of Dwayne's hand across her waist had become leaden, cutting off her air. He tried joining his fingers with hers and then laid a leg over her thigh. Soon, he shifted his weight to lie on top of her, pressing her face into the bedding.

Turning her head sideways, she mumbled, "Dwayne, you're hurting me."

He lay still, his body an unyielding force pinning her to the mattress.

She pressed the sides of her hands to the bed and attempted to raise her shoulders. "Dwayne!"

He didn't move, but bit down on the skin of her back.

The sharp nip from his teeth pulled a yelp from her and she wriggled to get out from under him. He bit harder, but wouldn't move.

"Dwayne, what are you doing?"

He growled into her ear, but his words came out garbled.

"Please!"

The edge of panic in her voice shunted her into wakefulness. The paralysis she'd been trying to escape became reality. The room came into focus and something she couldn't see was holding her in a vise. A keening noise rose from her throat, but didn't climb any higher. Sweat sprang from her forehead and ran into the pillowcase.

"Let me … "

The whispered words made her head whip to the side, but nothing moved in the bedroom. Still, she wasn't convinced she was alone. Her heart pulsed at a maddening pace and her vision blurred and darkened. Her breathing slowed and Josette sensed she was about to pass out. The image of herself unconscious on the bed, with a nauseating and terrifying presence she couldn't reconcile with Dwayne, slowed her galloping thoughts.

Taking deep drags of air, she mumbled one of the prayers that had always been a source of comfort. Halfway through the twenty-third Psalm, the oppressive heaviness lifted. In stages, she turned over and then curled on her side, too weak to move.

She lay there hoping Dwayne, or whatever had come to visit, would find its way back to the depths of hell and leave her alone. The idea of it returning was too much to bear, but she couldn't get her body to obey her command to get up. The loss of control left her ready to weep, but she couldn't give in to feeling sorry for herself.

She squeezed her eyes shut and willed herself to sit up. Her limbs were like cement blocks, but she crawled to the side of the bed and got to her feet. A flick of the wrist shed light from the bedside lamp. Trailing her fingers on the mattress, she made her way across the room and stopped at the bedroom door.

She had an idea and hoped she had the energy to carry it out.
